NUI Maynooth awards Entrance Scholarships to 22 international students
NUI Maynooth has awarded Entrance Scholarships to 22 International Scholars attending the University. International students now account for 12% of the student population on-campus, representing 25 countries such as China, Peru, Japan and the United States. The top undergraduate award was made to Angelique Griffith from the United States who is studying for a Bachelor of Arts in English and Spanish, with the top Graduate award going to Ruchun Jin from China who is undertaking a Masters degree in Computer Science (Software Engineering).
Speaking at the award ceremony, Professor Lawrence Taylor, Vice President for International Affairs at NUI Maynooth congratulated the scholars and welcomed them to the University saying that “they play a key role in adding to the scholarly and cultural tradition at NUI Maynooth.“ He also noted the importance of building international relationships for an island nation like Ireland.
Mr. Toshinao Urabe, the Japanese Ambassador, and one of seven Ambassadors attending the ceremony, expressed his delight at being able to meet Kazuya Tachikawa, one of the undergraduate Entrance Scholars and one of four Japanese students at NUI Maynooth, saying, “it is important to be here to celebrate the achievements of students from my country”.
The International Entrance Scholarships, which acknowledge academic excellence, are awarded to students based on their results from academic work completed prior to application to NUI Maynooth. This year’s intake of international students comprises over 100 from 25 countries, with the total international cohort accounting for 12% of the student body at NUI Maynooth.
The scholarship awards, totalling €40,000, were divided equally among undergraduate and postgraduate students, with one scholarship of €5,000, five scholarships of €2,000 and five scholarships of €1,000 being presented at each level of study. The scholars were characteristic of the geographic diversity of international students at NUI Maynooth, representing Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, India, Japan, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, Saudi Arabia, the United States of America, and Vietnam.
